Reading / Language Arts

  • The Orphan of Ellis Island, by Elvira Woodruff - each lesson concludes with a personal response journal entry and an assignment based upon Gardner's Seven Intelligences and our district/ state guidelines. Response journals are completed with traditional paper and pencil, on the DreamWriter, or as a word processing document using MS Word™.

  • Research - students write a short essay on a famous immigrant of their choice. Students use PowerPoint™ to produce their final drafts. Illustrations are scanned in, photographed digitally or captured from video or laserdisc with a Snappy video capture device.

    4. Dreams in the Golden Country: The Diary of Zipporah Feldman, a Jewish Immigrant Girl (Dear America), by Kathryn Lasky

    5. When Jessie Came Across the Sea, by Amy Hest

    6. The Hundred Penny Box, by Sharon Bell Mathis - great book for teaching autobiographies and a wonderful fundraiser. Have your students collect a mile of pennies!  Lots of measurement and problem-solving activities!
